Human-Robot User Studies in Eldercare: Lessons Learned
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper describes our experiences in collecting user data on humanrobot interaction in nursing homes for the elderly. Learnings from two experiments were used to develop guidelines to support human-robot user studies with elderly users, in particular for experiments in an eldercare institution. Our experiences show that this demands a very strict organization, full cooperation by nursing personnel and extreme attention to informing the participants both before and during the experiment. Furthermore, first analysis of data from the studies suggests that social abilities in a robotic interface contribute to feeling comfortable talking to it and invite elders to be more expressive.

Automated Elder Home Care: Long Term Adaptive Aiding and Support We Can Live With
We have been working on home automation to support eldercare. This is an instance of long term humanautomation interaction in very intimate and personal settings with a potentially difficult user population. We report our design philosophy and some of the lessons learned relative to that philosophy from a six month field test with representatives of this user community. As a separate research t...
متن کاملHobbit, a care robot supporting independent living at home: First prototype and lessons learned
One option to address the challenge of demographic transition is to build robots that enable aging in place. Falling has been identified as themost relevant factor to cause amove to a care facility. The Hobbit project combines research from robotics, gerontology, and human–robot interaction to develop a care robot which is capable of fall prevention and detection as well as emergency detection ...
متن کاملStrategies for Human-Driven Robot Comprehension of Spatial Descriptions by Older Adults in a Robot Fetch Task
This contribution presents a corpus of spatial descriptions and describes the development of a human-driven spatial language robot system for their comprehension. The domain of application is an eldercare setting in which an assistive robot is asked to "fetch" an object for an elderly resident based on a natural language spatial description given by the resident. In Part One, we describe a corp...
متن کاملUsability and Portability Lessons Learned from the 2003 AAAI Robot Rescue Competition
In order to realize the broad use of robotic systems in hazardous environments, shortcomings in robot interfaces, control system configurability, and overall usability must be addressed. A concerted effort was made to build a foundation of well-engineered communication, perception and autonomous behavior that is robust to changing, unstructured environments and which can be reused across differ...
متن کاملAn Autonomous Tour-Guide Robot for Public Places
In this paper, we present our recent experiences with QuiXote, a mobile robot for guided tours inside public buildings. The most relevant results obtained during last year are presented, underlying learned lessons during experimentation. The purpose of the work presented here is to deploy a feasible autonomous robot for tour guiding, interacting directly or remotely with visiting people. Key-Wo...
